One of the most helpful things to do might be to get some exercise, according to a new study. “It gives us an idea of something that maybe we don’t always think about for treatment of insomnia,” Paruthi said. Regular exercise was associated with significantly better sleep, the study showed. There are plenty of reasons why physical activity may help in getting a good night’s rest. Physical activity helps regulate the body’s internal clock and promotes deeper, more restorative sleep,” Björnsdóttir said.

There are several useful methods to treat the condition, including fixing your sleep hygiene and engaging in cognitive behavioral therapy specifically for insomnia. What do you do on those nights where you just know sleep isn’t coming — or, at least, not without a fight? The condition affects a lot of people, but is often underestimated as a cause of insomnia, Paruthi said. Don’t let bed become a place associated with long stretches of stressing to get to sleep, said Salas, who is also a sleep neurologist at the Johns Hopkins Center for Sleep and Wellness. “The worst thing somebody with insomnia could do is stay in bed and not sleep,” she said.

There are moments in life that stick in memory as a fulcrum between before and after. Rohit, Arti’s new husband, was with her, his presence a tangible sign of his support. Goldman Sachs announced its 2023 class of managing directors Thursday afternoon, giving 608 employees the coveted title. It's a smaller cohort than the bank's 2021 MD class, down 5% amid a dealmaking slowdown. Still, Goldman appears to have taken pains to promote employees in revenue-generating divisions like investment banking and trading. Goldman says the percentage of women it promoted as part of the 2023 MD class sets a record, up 1% from 2021. Two years ago, Goldman promoted the largest managing director class in its history, naming 643 employees to the designation in 2021.

As Nasreen Parveen ran, her mind focused on nothing but putting one foot in front of the other. Occasionally, for the briefest flash, she remembered the high window ledge and her decision not to jump. Finally, after more than four miles of running on torn, blistered feet, Nasreen reached the bus station. From there, a bus brought her to a train station in the nearest city. Nasreen Parveen decided to run for her life at the same moment she decided not to end it. But as she prepared to jump, she looked out and received a stunning, seemingly impossible glimpse into the future. The young woman plummeted to the ground, hit hard on her back and then lay in the dirt, grievously injured. Nasreen decided that the step into thin air, the drop and the dirt were not for her. But she was equally certain that she could not live the life that her family was trying to bind her to.
